Essentially, a story describes how situations and persons change and why. Each event, person and conversation that is part of the story is relevant to the changes that are described. Suddenly, a change of events, the ‘inciting incident’ in scriptwriting terms, throws a previous situation out of balance. The story then describes the clash between subjective expectations and objective (cruel) reality. A good storyteller describes what it’s like for the main character to be in a changing situation, to take action despite risks, and ultimately discover the truth.
